I haven't posted all of my photos here because I feel like I post them enough places as it is. I post them on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr, and Tumblr. Is that a classic case of oversharing? Maybe it is.

Anyway, I decided to post this shot here because I'm just so proud of it.

    Day95

One of the things I'm learning about photography is "be prepared for the unexpected." I lugged my 500mm lens up Kennesaw Mountain with the intention of just doing some standard mountaintop shots, but I saw this guy and couldn't resist. I had no idea I would have the chance to shoot one of these beautiful butterflies, and I'm just glad I had the right equipment. I couldn't get close to him, so having the telephoto lens was quite fortunate.

When you work in manual mode, you can control how long the shutter stays open. If you were shooting a sports event, you would want to shoot with a short exposure time so as not to have blurry photos. When you shoot something like the moon, you control how bright the image appears with the exposure time. Here are three versions, each with a slightly longer exposure time.

The exposure on this image is 1/160 or 0.00625 seconds. Pretty darn fast!

This image was taken with an exposure of 1/125, or 0.008 seconds. Notice how it's a bit brighter than the first image.

And here is a shot taken with an exposure of 1/100, or 0.01 seconds. Obviously the brightest shot of the three and this seems to me to be the best of the three shots. What do you think?

Several people have asked me lately about what camera I have or what equipment I use. Well, here you go.

My "carry around everywhere camera." The Fujifilm FinePix F505 16 MP CMOS Sensor and 15x Optical Zoom Digital Camera. It's only slightly larger than a deck of cards, so it makes it easy to take pretty much wherever I go.

Next is my Super-Zoom camera. TheNikon COOLPIX P500 12.1 CMOS Digital Camera with 36x NIKKOR Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens. This camera does a great job of being a very versatile camera. It does good macro or "up close" shots, and that zoom is really amazing.

Now this is my newest camera and the one I use for the "big shots." The  Sony A77 24.3 MP Translucent Mirror Digital SLR With 16-50mm F2.8 lens is easily the best camera I've ever owned.

I also bought these two lenses for the Sony A77.This first one is the Sony SAL70300G 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM ED G-Series Compact Super Telephoto Zoom Lens

And this one is theSony Alpha SAL35F18 A-mount Wide Angle Lens.

I also have two tripods, one of which is pretty sturdy and another smaller one which is more mobile. And I have a remote control for the Sony A77, which really helps with those moon photos.

So which camera do I prefer? Well, the answer depends on the job. When I want to take "serious" photos, the A77 is the obvious answer. The downside with that camera is that it isn't as easy to carry around. It's a big camera, and I have to carry multiple lenses. For example, when I go to Braves' games this year I probably won't take the A77, as it is just too much to keep up with. I might take it once, but for most games I will take the Nikon P500. The zoom is perfect for baseball games.

I am very happy with the three cameras I now have. Of course I also have a Droid Bionic phone, and it takes pretty good pictures as well.

I also want to thank my photographer buddy and fellow educator up in Oregon, Rick Scheibner. He has given me a great deal of advice, and I am very grateful. I encourage you to check out his amazing work here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/61340008@N02/

This happened about 15 miles from where I grew up. Paul in the video is a long time family friend, and his mother and my aunt are still best friends to this day.
